How information flows through an enterprise
Creation and collection
Day in, day out, a flood of information is processed across the enterprise. Even
though paper still is the number one data carrier, electronic media such as memory sticks or mobile communicators are rapidly gaining share. Consequently, measures have not only to be taken to prevent careless disposal of memos, faxes or email printouts, but also the handling procedures regarding electronic media need to be defined and followed as well.
Usage, processing and storage
Once recorded, information is used, processed, and stored in several ways. First and foremost, it is necessary to very clearly prescribe the access rights of
individual departments and personnel.
Deletion or disposal
After use, information has to be disposed of in a manner compliant with security requirements. Information, which members of your staff no longer require and hence of no further value, can still be of great use to third parties. Therefore, management should control the process and stipulate what happens to data after use.
